A Smashing Game: Badminton Finals 2018

The highly anticipated badminton match happened recently on the 21st of May. RVians flocked to the Jurong East Sports Hall to support both our boys and girls A Division Badminton teams. Playing against Raffles Institution, our teams were here to compete for none other than the Champion’s trophy.

Posing with their shining trophies

“We started training since November last year. Once the school term began, we started going for morning runs every Monday morning at 7am until our competition commenced,” the boys’ team captain Lionel Chong shared with us. “I personally felt that my team really put in a lot of effort for our preparation and never gave up. During training, we usually cheer each other on and try to ensure everyone is focused and serious in his or her training.”

Giving a pep talk before the match

With a common goal of being in the National Top 4, the boys team has definitely exceeded expectations, clinching 1st Runner Up position in the finals! Those watching the competition will surely remember Sean Lim’s intense battle, or Gwen’s impressive shots. “I told myself I just wanted to go out and play my best,” Gwen told us when asked about her reflections on the game. The will and determination of our players are truly admirable. Commenting on her team’s performance, girls team captain Wen Shien said, “Well, as a team, it wasn’t the worst game we’ve played but I wouldn’t say it’s the best either. I think our team perpetually struggles with coping with the stress and pressure of playing crucial matches with huge crowds, but I think this year we were better at managing the pressure, more so than previous years.”

Beaming with their medals

Indeed, our girls did us proud and achieved National 1st Runner Up!

We had a fierce battle against Raffles Institution and though it was tough, River Valley High School sure didn’t go down without a hard fight. As team captain Wen Shien said, “If you put your heart to it, play for each other on the court, and seriously just work hard together, you can go super far.” Congratulations to the following players!
