Rallying to Victory: RVHS Badminton

With the odds firmly stacked against them, River Valley High School’s A Division Boy’s Badminton team came from behind to stage a dramatic comeback win in their Second Round match against Nanyang Junior College.

But the narrative could have been very different had Team RV capitalised on an early advantage.

Having taken a 2-0 lead, Team RV’s opponents clawed back dramatically, tying the game at 2-2. This meant that it came down to a deciding doubles match with Guo Yuanlin (6G) and Cheng Jing Wen (5G) representing RV.

With each pair having won a set each, the pair found themselves trailing 14-20 to their opponents.

“I felt a lot of pressure and was very nervous as our opponents were 1 point away and a single mistake could have concluded the game,” recalled Jing Wen.

Undeterred, the pair steeled themselves for what would become a miracle comeback. Without allowing their opponents to score the crucial winning point, Jing Wen and Yuanlin fought back to eventually clinch the set 22-20, and winning the game for Team RV.

“We were definitely elated when the match ended as we were able to win the game and also did RV and our A div badminton team proud,” Jing Wen added.

Team RV has two more games to play against Dunman High School and Anderson Junior College for the second round of their competition. Here’s wishing them, and all our other athletes, all the best for the ongoing A Division season!
