Why We Run - RVHS Cross Country

“We run not only for ourselves, but for our team.”

For the group of RVians bemoaning the number of rounds they have to run during PE, there is a team of dedicated athletes running tirelessly every training session. They are none other than the Cross Country team. While the typical inactive RVian would undoubtedly be perplexed by why someone would ever pursue running as a sport, running is their passion for the former.

The Editorial Club took the liberty to interview the Cross Country team about their seasons as well as to provide readers a glimpse into the life of a runner.

The seasons have just ended for the Cross Country team. This year, they have achieved commendable results - the A division girls was placed 5th, the B division girls 9th while the B division boys placed 12th. The team was heartened by their performance as they had pushed themselves hard during the seasons. Their efforts bore fruit with many runners attaining their new personal best. The distance they covered during their competition was a staggering 3.8km. However, seeing their fellow runners fighting and pushing on during the race kept them going throughout.

Admittedly, while passing the NAPFA 2.4km run may have been a breeze for them, their seasons were certainly not. The runners conceded that the pre-season training was particularly tough as the training intensity had increased significantly. They constantly felt mentally and physically drained between attending each training session and juggling their schoolwork.

Despite the tough times they faced, the optimistic runners would cheer one another on and show their support. They describe their team as a fun group of people close enough to be regarded as family.

Special mention goes to their coach, Coach Haja, for consistently making the effort to boost their morale and for showering them with encouragements every training session. Additionally, the team would also like to thank him for always having faith in them and for providing them with his unwavering support and trust.

Even though their seasons have ended, the Cross Country team will never stop chasing bigger and bolder dreams. With the belief that great things can be achieved through challenging one's limit, they have set their sights on the 4/5th team place in next year’s nationals. Keep fighting Cross Country team...may the course be with you!
