Fast Feet and Nimble Hands: 2018 Table Tennis Seasons

C Division Girls

Much had been expected from the C Division girls of the Table Tennis Club. After all, in this year’s West Zone competition, they emerged first runner-up after a fierce match against Nanyang Girls High School.

At the Nationals, they then beat Yishun Town Secondary School and Mayflower Secondary School in quick succession. Tension was highest when they played against long-time rivals, Nanhua High School. The C Division girls exclaimed that it was the most nerve-wrecking moment for them.

“As it has been a few years since RV has beaten Nanhua, we were stressed and nervous as we wanted to beat Nanhua really badly. We went there with the determination to win,” said Ernie, a Year 2 representative from the team.

The girls concluded their season proudly as one of Top 8 teams in the Nationals.

Combined with a passionate sense of team spirit, the team will no doubt strive to attain even greater results in the future. The Year 1s and 2s that make up the C Division team may still be small, but they certainly have lofty ambitions. The unanimous aim for them is one which RV has regrettably not clinched in this division for quite some years – the Nationals Top 4.

Nevertheless, this hasn’t deterred them from aiming high, and they have demonstrated strong determination in attaining this goal.

The girls also hope that their hard work will eventually pay off so that they will receive even greater recognition from the school and their peers.

A Division Boys

Our A Division Boys also showcased their brilliance and dedication to the sport in what is arguably the most competitive division in the tournament. But beyond the years of intensive preparation, the story of the A Division Boys team is also one of uncertainty and sentimentality.

At the start of the year, they wondered if they even had enough members to send a team, because the division lacked the required number of players. Two months later, they wondered if they could even pass the first round of competition.

But in April this year, the A Division boys delivered as their predecessors have, blazing their way quickly through teams in Eunoia JC, Victoria JC, Yishun JC and NUS to qualify for the Nationals Top 8. The crucial match was played on Monday, 16th April, against National Junior College.

In a decisive and emotional battle against many of their personal friends and training partners, the boys lost their opportunity to qualify for the Top 4 narrowly, finishing in 5th position.

Indeed, these achievements and the commendable effort of the other Table Tennis players who have represented the school in the Girl’s A and B Division is something that we should all be proud of.

Radiant smiles after a good match.

We should also not forget the C Division boys, B Division and A Division girls who fought commendably for the school as well. Congratulations for a well-played season!
