Trajectory of Improvement: 2018 Volleyball A Division Girls

On Monday, 9th April 2018, our RV Volleyball A Division Girls engaged in a face-off with Meridian Junior College (MJC) in their first match held at CCA Branch MOE sports hall. All geared up and ready for their match, the girls fought fiercely from the beginning, displaying excellent teamwork with their strategic well-coordinated passes on the court. Team RV demonstrated their prowess right from the outset by claiming victory over the first set of the match. MJC caught up immediately by scoring the next set. The decisive match came down to the fifth set whereby the scores were tied at 2-2. Though our girls played with grit and strong determination to win, MJC took down the set with a small point gap of 13-15, ending the match with an overall score of 2-3.

After the first match with MJC ended, our A Division girls’ team trained hard with sweat and perseverance in preparation for the next match. Their efforts definitely paid off during the match with Raffles Institution (RI), where our girls trounced their opponent, emerging victorious with a perfect score of 3-0. “To win a match, we need to have the mental strength and confidence in ourselves that we will get the next ball; that is how we work towards winning point by point,” states Koh Wern Ying of 5A.

RV’s last match was against a formidable opponent, Dunman High School (DHS), the champion runner up of 2017. It was certainly an intense and physically draining match for our girls and though DHS claimed overall victory of the match, Team RV was still proud of their performance on court. “I think that we did well, especially when we almost took down one set whilst competing with DHS. We are definitely proud of this accomplishment,” declared Lim Minqi of 5N. The coach of the volleyball team even commended the girls after the match for exceeding expectations.

RV Volleyball A Division girls ended their season with an overall 3rd place in Group B. The girls expressed their strong determination for the next season to “advance to second round and beat the school that we lost to!” quoting Koh Yiting from 5Q. Though Team RV was regrettably unable to proceed to the next round, the outstanding performance and resilience displayed by our girls are definitely commendable. Volleyball is never a one man show, but rather a sport that requires strong synergy as well as trust amongst teammates to each play their important and irreplaceable role on the court. We look forward to the Volleyball A division Girls’ next season in 2019!
