Why Lead? (Facil Diary)

L E A D I love Y.LEAD!

Am I the only one unable to stop dancing to The Great Escape everytime I hear it?

Well, apparently not.

Even two weeks after the event, the school compound was peppered with Year 3s, facilitators and OCs wearing their blue, red or orange Y.LEAD shirts for TGIF.

As a self-proclaimed events veteran, I thought I could handle Y.LEAD. When I look back now, that week was as fulfilling as it was difficult. I took on the role of a facilitator, although a more accurate job description would have been: entertainer, jukebox, leadership enthusiast, RV advocate, lunchtime conversationalist, information relayer, game master... the list is endless. Being a facilitator came with many responsibilities but also a lot of fun and freedom.

Y.LEAD is an event heavily focused on nurturing leadership. This was one of the rare times in which I felt that I was given the freedom of a JC student, and I could see the OCs and facilitators valuing that trust and as a result, exceeding expectations. I believe that it, too, had an impressive effect on our Y3s, and I really encourage everyone to join such events for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to give back to the school.

My favourite part of Y.LEAD? I’d let the pictures talk:

It wasn’t just the participants of Y.LEAD 2017 that attended. Seniors, juniors and alumni alike joined that very night to create memories which we would never forget. What a way to end this week!

Close runner-up: the 15-Hour Challenge

Truly an exceptional segment of Y.LEAD which was full of unforgettable games like YLEAD-OH-YLEAD. Shoutout to the 15HC Committee!

I am not exaggerating when I say that Y.LEAD 2017 is the most successful event I have ever been involved in, even with the notorious “scoldings” we got. Who could forget Mr Ng’s passionate display of leadership after Commencement Night, or the climbing out of school incident? (Oops, was I not supposed to reveal that? 😉)

Thank you Y3’17 batch for being such wonderfully lively participants! Thank you to my fellow batch of facils and OCs: I am so thankful to have you by my side throughout this journey. Last but not least, thank you to the teachers and staff for their invaluable contributions that have made this event so successful.

Special thanks to Fam D and D41SUKI for more than just teaching me; you have all inspired me to walk this path again - this time as a genuine friend to my juniors.

P.s. If you have yet to do so, check out RV Photography Club’s YLEAD album on Facebook.

Plus, I highly recommend watching Kaiming’s vlog series on Y.LEAD.
