T1&2 Conclusion

2017 Semester 1

A lot has happened in the past five months of 2017. Let us pay homage once more to the exuberance of this semester. Without further ado, let these pictures transport you back to the fond times!

REVEL Fest: Night of Lustre

38th Student Council Investiture

SYF Appreciation Performances

And finally, a fitting end to this, one that every RVian doesn’t want to remember but cannot forget...

...RIP Fried Food Friday.

Notable Sports Achievements

The entire school rejoiced as the A Division Floorball girls returned, armed with the triumph of their first ever championship title in the Nationals.

The boys and girls of RVHS A Division Badminton once again proved why they are our school’s pride. The girls’ team clinched the runner-up position while the boys narrowly missed out in an intensive match. Nonetheless, they took fourth placing.

The A Division Netball girls’ performance was also laudable as their impressive skills and teamwork enabled them to emerge fourth in the national meet.

TGIF: Ze music

A compilation of this semester’s overplayed but beloved music:

Bruno Mars- That’s what I like

Ed Sheeran-Shape of you

Clean Bandit-Rockabye

The Chainsmokers & Coldplay- Something just like this

Thinking about winding down during the June holidays? Here are some suggestions you can consider if you wish to take a break from your preparations for the mid-year examination:

Movies:

1. The Martian (Sci-fi)

Directed by Ridley Scott, the Martian provides us a glimpse into the future of space travel. In the movie, Mark Wattney (played by Matt Damon) is trapped on Mars and forced to do some heavy experimenting in order to survive. This includes wacky science experiments, planting potatoes on Mars and surviving sub-zero storms. The movie’s charm lies in its attempt to explain everything scientifically while creating a slightly tense atmosphere that is imbued with humour.

Mars has pretty cool sunsets which you can admire, provided that you are able to survive long enough to witness its beauty. Try loaning some spacesuits from NASA.

Can you grow potatoes on Mars? With a really special ingredient, you probably can.

2. The Departed (Action/Thriller)

If you want something old-school with a slight twist to it, try this movie which is directed by Martin Scorsese. Starring Hollywood stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson, this movie is full of thrills and suspense. Combined with Scorsese’s sharp directing and a fast plot, you can never go wrong with this classic.

3. It Follows (Horror)

Having cemented its position in the horror movie world, It Follows is a horrific rollercoaster ride. In this movie, the characters are immediately pursued by an “it”/ being the moment they have intercourse with the current target who is being pursued. Thus, this can also be representative of STIs in our current reality and reflects how those who have contracted the disease are stigmatised.

Volunteering Opportunities:

It is no secret that every student would have to serve a minimum of 6 community hours every year, but this does not necessarily mean that it has to be boring. Aside from your class’s VIA projects, here are some organisations which you can consider volunteering at:

1. TWC2 (Transient Workers Count Too)

TWC2 is a non-profit organisation which strives to improve conditions for low-wage migrant workers. As a student, you would probably not have much time to volunteer, so you can consider joining their Outreach programme which is held every month. During the Outreach programme, you would approach various groups such as domestic helpers, Bangladeshi or Burmese migrant workers, etc. and inform them about the necessary actions which they can take if they are mistreated in their line of work. The premise for this is that empowerment is all about knowing our rights.

2. SPCA ( Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)

Animals lovers rejoice. If you love animals and are interested in taking care of them, try volunteering at SPCA. Located near Choa Chu Kang, the SPCA is a good way for you to express your love for animals while doing something worthwhile. There’s a catch though: volunteers would have to be at least 17 years of age.

3. SGCARES (Singapore Cares)

SGCARES is a platform created by the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre, and it is used as an outlet to encourage volunteerism. This means that there is a wide array of activities available for you to partake in so you have a plethora of choices!

And that concludes the first semester of 2017☺

Remember, our GPAs or Rank Points may be important to us, but it should not force us to sacrifice precious moments with our family members and time which could have been utilised for self-exploration. Having said that, we must also dedicate time to our academic work to prepare for the upcoming battle ahead. For those who have been excelling academically, keep it up! For those who have not, have faith in your ability to turn things around. At the end of the day, your efforts will matter much.

Maintaining a balance between work and play is key to spending a healthy, fulfilling holiday, and may this June be one that you can invigorate and enrich yourself. We all need to unwind, and there are great options such as exercising, spending time with friends and family and exploring new adventures. It doesn’t hurt much to stop and reflect either.

That’s all from RVSEC; we hope you all will have a GREAT June break! Chill out!✌
