Revel Auditions ’17: Afternoons of Glow

Revel Auditions ’17:

Afternoons of Glow

Missed the Revel Auditions? Want to know the juicy details? You’ve come to the right place! RVSEC presents you with the very best compilation of the humorous performances put up by our talented friends as they vie for the finalist positions. This year we see a huge turnout of fresh and returning participants, much to the delight of the Revel fanbase, judges and SC members.

Without further ado, here are snippets of our favourite exchanges…

Day 1

WOW Category

“You know how this category is called wow? You’ve just achieved that. Wow. I have nothing negative to say.”

- Ms Tan on Dai Yizhuo’s choreography involving a mystical red light seemingly coming from his hands (or some other unknown source).

“I usually use terms like graceful and elegant to describe female dancers, but ...You really were that.”

-Mr Dass on Yong Fongsin’s one-man dance/gymnastics routine

Band Category

“I think you’re making it your own personal goal to make it into the finals every year. So, we’ll see you in the dance category next year?”

-Mr Dass on impressive performance by 2-time finalist Gerald Goh who participated in the band category this year.

English Solo Category

“I’m singing Lorde by Royals.”

-Gwen makes a lasting impression with her introduction

Day 2

Day of the dance showdown

(not 1...but 3 dance groups)

Who forgot to move the drums?

Don’t blame us for the poor quality. They move too fast.

No comments on this one, the fangirling in the LT was overpowering. When ‘TT’ came on, we stopped taking notes and gawked, too.

This picture says it all….

Day 3

WOW Category

“I want to see a saw going through Clinton, or knives thrown at Audrey.”

- Mr Dela Cruz suggests performing bloodlust on the student judges stage magic to Amos Ker, who performed street magic with some cards and a magical paper bag

Band Category

“I wanted more chemistry between the 2 of you.”

-Mr Dela Cruz on Jerale and Giselle’s not-so-steamy duet of Shape of You.

“I play rhythm games on iPad, so…”

-said Neo Shi Yun when Mr Dela Cruz asked about drumming entirely from an iPad

Solo Category

“John Legend is a legend.”

“If you were Rihanna, we would all be under your umbrella.”

- Mr Dela Cruz suggests to Chan Sheng Feng (All of me) and Ng Yin Yii (Diamonds) to express their own style instead of adopting a John Legend/Rihanna style

Q&A with Mr Dela Cruz :

Q: What’s different in this year’s edition of Revel?

A: Mainly, the quantity and quality of the dance groups have gone up.

Usually it’s clear who the finalist will be from the auditions, but this time we can’t tell.

Q: Why bring back the WOW category?

A: It’s not that we brought it back; we just didn’t have enough participants last year. This year we have quite a few [6] participants though.

Q: How would you describe the judges’ commentary style?

A: Mr Dass and I tend to make jokes and pointed remarks when commenting.

Because Revel is a signature event of SC, it’s less formal and there’s more freedom to do so. Also, since I know some of the students, I can play around with (tease) them a bit.

Guest judges who come in tend to give more professional judgment.

As for Miss Ng, she really knows what she is saying. She’s able to give specific comments on the skill quality of performers.

Q: Any advice for returning participants?

A: Even if you don’t get through the semifinals/finals, keep trying.

There was a Revel contestant who finally made it into the finals in year 6 after trying for a few years.

Q: What will score brownie points with the judges?

A: Confidence.

Confidence is more than just stage presence. You can tell when someone is trying too hard or faking it.

A performance is a combination of many decisions, like the song choice, key choice and which portion to sing. Confidence is about being deliberate about these choices and standing by your own choice.

BONUS

Benjamin Yoap literally behind-the-scenes (bet you missed it):

“都是你的错”

“都是你的错”

“都是你的错”

And that’s that! Are you as excited as we are for Revel Fest’17 now? Whether you’re a participant or a supporter, I’m sure we will all enjoy this year’s ‘Night of Lustre’ and the exuberant performances!
