I went to Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 2012 as part of the Combined UG OCIP group. Our primary destination for our visit was Koh Kho (Death Island), a small 3 x 1 km piece of land in the middle of the Tonle Bassac River. The origins of its name stem from the island’s history as a mass killing field. In the week we spent there, we collected data from the villagers that would contribute to an installation of solar panels island-wide so that they would have electricity stored up for night time when the generator is shut off. However, our teachers decided to take us to Cambodia’s genocide museum for an educational visit. On the island, children walked through mass graveyards every day to get to school, and they probably still do, as a complete exhumation of the remains is near impossible.
