The Toy Doll

She gripped the newly-bought doll in her hands. Her daughter had pestered her to get this toy for her birthday. This doll, with puffy straight hair and freckles, did not appear adorable to her at all. She thought that there would be other toys better suited for her daughter. Nonetheless, she succumbed to her daughter’s pleas after a week of pestering. She had had enough of her daughter's badgering. After all, it would not hurt to get her this toy, would it? Wanting to insert the batteries into the doll to see if it worked before surprising her daughter with it, she turned the doll around. She lifted the doll's red and green-striped shirt, revealing the battery case. At the very instant she opened the battery door, her gaze shifted to the doll's head- it had swivelled 180 degrees to the back. The doll's sky blue eyes met hers. The doll greeted her. She jolted backwards with widened eyes. She fixed her gaze at the doll for a moment. Her eyes shifted back to the battery case. It was empty. She lost grip of the doll and dropped it to the ground. She clasped her hands on her cheeks as a scream escaped from her mouth. She could not believe her eyes. How could a doll without batteries work? 'No,' she shook her head and thought, 'how could that be possible? It must have been my wild imagination. It must have been. It must have.' She knelt down, reached for the doll and tugged its leg gingerly, once. No reaction. She tugged again. This time, twice. The doll furrowed its eyebrows and landed its gaze on her. It was stern. It bared its teeth and roared, 'How could you drop me?' She fell backwards and let out another scream. She grabbed the doll, scrambled to the fireplace and flung it towards the raging fire. Immediately, she rushed to the kitchen to grab a bottle of oil before swinging half of it into the fire. She threw herself backwards, onto the floor as the fire burst into fiercer flames and devoured the doll. She made sure the doll had turned into ashes before she left the house to take a breather. One thing’s for sure: she would never purchase a doll again. There was definitely no need for the episode to repeat. ~ The doll stood in front of the house. Its fiery eyes followed her back as she meandered along the walkway. It grinned. (Story is based on a part of a movie- Child's Play)
